Another bug that other users seem to be having as well is that one cannot equip pets at all through the store itself.
The only way I can equip pets is to tap "play". I am then taken to a page with choices of world and swim-star. There is a pull out tab on the side. Although it is the very same store that one reaches in other ways, the icon on the pull-out tab is the only one that allows me to reach a store when I can equip the pets.
